REBRANDING + A PERSONAL NAME CHANGE

I wasn't sure where to start with this post as it's so much more than a professional rebrand.  When I married Bill nearly four years ago I kept my maiden name.  There were many reasons for this, which I won't bore you with here, but I always said I'd change my name if the time ever came for us to have children.  Well, four years later we still don't have any so I kept thinking, 'how long until I do this?'.

Aside from the kids thing, I always wanted to use my name for my work but was loathed to do it only to then change my name a year or so later and have to do it all again, so I chose the moniker Hey Jo as a stop gap.  It has served me well but I am more than ready for a change so I recently made the decision to stop the waiting and get things going.  I am starting the name change process once and for all.  And if kids come along at any point then it's all done already... ha!

It's a rather long and dull process to change a name legally (what with all the banks, businesses, passport etc) but I'm hoping that by early Spring it'll be all done and I can finally enjoy this new beginning.

Which brings me to the images above.  They're various design elements I am going to be using as part of my new brand, and while they're not finished yet I hope they illustrate the new direction I'm moving in.  I'd love to know your thoughts!

PS I've also just realised it's exactly 5 years ago today that Bill proposed to me in New York!  I don't know why this is relevant, but it seemed kind of timely, given the subject matter of this post!

  1. oo How exciting - I keep on wondering when I'm going to change my name.. I have to say my thinking is exactly the same as yours- my kids (fingers crossed) will have my husbands name and in personal circles I'm known by my husbands name but legally I haven't changed anything and professionally I use my maiden name. I think as it's just the two of us running our company it will look bad being a Mr and Mrs - a lot of our clients haven't even guessed were a couple.. but I have been thinking it would be nice to face the inevitable and get it done!

I haven't had a chance to say how much I LOVE your shop.. Your prints are amazing! And I'm loving your sophisticated branding.. You's is SO clever! x

    1. Thanks Tori! Yes, it's such a tricky one. I don't think I would necessarily be in the same situation had I not started my own business, but when it's my work and my home life sort of combined I needed to just make a decision, so here we are! Odd but sort of nice too! x

  4. love the new direction with your new name! at first glance I read the "H" as "hey" then "J" for "jo" - actually a clever (if even if not intentional) transition.

i'm keeping my name for now so we'll see if i ever get to your point of changing it, too.

    1. So many people have said to me (since posting this & announcing via twitter) that they are in the same boat. I love it, I'm as unusual as I thought! And yes, the H & J or J & H luckily work together so I've been knocking this idea around for a while in my head while I figured out what I was doing next.

  7. I love the new look. The colour palette is different - like the use of green. On the surname front I am all for keeping my own name if the day ever comes. Mine is just a better one ;)

  8. Cheers to moving forward Jo, on all fronts! I have a tendency to be awfully timid embracing this in my own life, so seeing peers have the courage to do it is always inspiring. Thank you for that! Oh yes, and your new branding is elegant, understated and simply lovely. Just like you, m'dear! ;) xo
